Social Communication Group for Adults with ABI
About Our Program
Social Communication Group for Adults with ABI is designed to help adults transition back to meaningful life activities after brain injury. It is a bridging program for those who are struggling with community re-integration due to practical and interpersonal communication skills challenges.
Social communication deficits related to underlying cognitive changes can present as:
- Conversation that is overly personal or disinhibited; lack of ‘filter’;
- Difficulty choosing appropriate topics or reading others’ body language; knowing when to adjust language to different situations or audiences;
- Speech that is overly detailed or off topic without coming to the point; “turns” that are too long or confusing to follow;
- Poor initiation or generation of topics, “turns” that are too short, awkward, or conversations that can’t get off the ground;
- Inability to judge when and how to enter/exit a conversation.
The Social Communication Group runs in two phases:
Phase One Active Training: Individualized goals targeted within the group context.
Phase Two Practice in Context: Skills learned from phase one are practiced in community-based activities with monthly group meetings.
