Communication Skills Group for adults with mild intellectual impairment

New for Spring 2017!

What: This communication skills program, specially designed for adults with mild intellectual impairment and delivered by a speech-language pathologist,  is now available! This 12 week program will cover practical and social communication skills useful for enhancing vocational and social success. It will be delivered in a small group format with plenty of opportunity for individual assessment.  Registration will be strictly limited to ensure maximum attention for each client. Our speech-language pathologist and assistant will work with you to set personalized goals that are important to you. Using a range of evidence-based therapy techniques, we will work with you toward achieving targeted outcomes. This program is ideal for those wanting to build and better maintain social relationships and those wanting to improve communication skills in the workplace. It is particularly well suited for young people making the important transition to young adulthood.

When: Offered on 12 Monday evenings (5:30-7:30pm). A short break will be provided. The program will begin on March 20 and end on June 19. There will be no sessions on April 17 and May 22, which are statutory holidays.

Where: These sessions will take place at our centrally located office on West Broadway, which is easily reached by public transit, in suite #1305 - 750 West Broadway (at Willow), in the Fairmont Medical Building.

Who: Adults aged 18 and up who have mild intellectual impairment are invited to attend this program. (Younger applicants will be considered on a case-by-case basis.) Participants should be independent for self-care (or bring an aide if necessary).

Cost:  The cost is $1800 for registration by January 30 and $2200 thereafter (registration will close March 1). Participants who are not already known to Columbia Speech and Language Services, Inc., will need to complete an application form and have a meeting with one of our team members before being accepted into the program, at an additional cost of $225.

Registration: Is now open and will be limited to only the first 8 participants on a first-come first-served basis. We reserve the right to register only those clients who we feel are likely to benefit, based on the application package and initial meeting. Please contact or phone 604-875-9100 and ask to talk to office manager Ada Baylis, speech-language pathology consultant Katelyn Eng, or clinic director Wendy Duke for more information.
